LA Mayoral Candidate Nithya Raman Backs Trump's Hollywood Tax Plan
The socialist candidate expressed support for federal tax incentives to boost the film industry, drawing criticism from a former rival.
Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman has voiced her support for President Donald Trump's proposal to offer federal tax incentives for film and television production, a move aimed at revitalizing Hollywood.
In a recent interview, Raman, identified as a socialist, stated her strong backing for the initiative, emphasizing her willingness to accept support from any level of government for the industry. "I would be very supportive of it," Raman said. "I’m going to take any kinds of support for this industry that we can get from any level of government. Absolutely."
She noted that Hollywood needs to remain competitive both nationally and internationally, acknowledging that production costs in California have led studios to consider filming in other states and countries. Raman plans to establish a Los Angeles Film Office within the mayor's office to attract studios and encourage local production, while also advocating for faster permitting and reduced fees for independent projects.
Her stance on the tax incentive drew criticism from former mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt, who accused Raman of not doing enough to aid the film industry. Pratt, who previously met with Trump to discuss a 25% federal film tax credit, challenged Raman's effectiveness. "I have zero political power, and I got more done in 3 weeks than she has in 3 years," Pratt stated. "If I can do it, what’s her excuse? She legit doesn’t wanna work."
Hollywood's economic challenges have been a central issue in the mayoral race. A recent study indicated that California's creative economy lost approximately 114,000 jobs between 2022 and 2025, with significant declines in film, television, and traditional media sectors. Raman has been actively engaging with industry leaders, including a recent meeting with associates of former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Recent polling suggests Raman has gained momentum in the mayoral race, with one poll showing her leading incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, a result Bass's campaign has contested.
