Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing mounting criticism from residents of the Boyle Heights neighborhood who are enduring an "unbearable rotting stench" following a fire that destroyed a large food warehouse.

Residents have expressed frustration with what they describe as an inadequate city response and a lack of transparency and resources. Mayor Bass stated that she understands their concerns and is committed to providing transparency, clear communication, and meaningful support. "Since day one, I have been in Boyle Heights listening to residents, meeting with families, and making sure their voices guide our response," Bass said.

The mayor, who is up for re-election this year, has directed city departments to collaborate with local, state, federal, nonprofit, and community partners to address the issue. Executive orders have been issued to mobilize resources and expedite the cleanup process. The city reports that mobile health clinics have been brought to the neighborhood, and thousands of air purifiers have been distributed.

Late last month, the county's public health department issued citations against the warehouse operator, Lineage, for "unsanitary and nuisance" conditions, imposing fines of $500 per day. Mayor Bass has set an August 13 deadline for Lineage to complete the cleanup. A spokesperson for Lineage stated on Monday that the company had completed 80% of the cleanup, up from 60% reported on July 31.

"Our goal is to complete bulk food waste removal from the site next week," the Lineage spokesperson told the BBC, adding that the company anticipates spending between $80 million and $100 million on the cleanup effort.

Workers in hard hats and neon vests, some wearing face coverings, are actively engaged in the cleanup operation. Officials from the local air quality authority and sheriff's office have also been present at the site.
