Law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles are increasing patrols and visibility around Jewish community sites as the High Holy Days commence. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) have both stated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents during this period.
The High Holy Days, which include Rosh Hashanah and culminate with Yom Kippur, began Friday at sundown. Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and is a time for reflection and community gatherings, traditionally accompanied by symbolic foods like apples dipped in honey. The following 10 days are known as the Days of Awe, a period of repentance and contemplation leading up to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Both the LAPD and LASD have emphasized their collaboration with community leaders and security partners. The agencies plan to have extra patrols and enhanced visibility at synagogues, schools, and cultural centers throughout Los Angeles County. They urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
“The Los Angeles Police Department stands with our Jewish community as we enter the High Holy Days,” the LAPD said in a statement. “We will have extra patrols and increased visibility at houses of worship, schools and cultural centers to ensure everyone can gather and worship safely.”
The LASD echoed this sentiment, stating its commitment to “safeguarding these important traditions and ensuring our community members feel secure.” Heightened patrols are intended to ensure the safety of all residents observing the holidays. The High Holy Days conclude with Yom Kippur on the evening of September 20.
