A sprawling French-inspired mansion on the La Jolla coastline, nicknamed ‘The Sand Castle,’ has been relisted for $87.5 million. The property, located in San Diego, was previously listed for $108 million in 2024.
The 13,000-square-foot estate includes a main mansion and a guest residence, featuring 10 ensuite bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. The construction of such large-scale oceanfront properties is now virtually impossible in California due to strict coastal development regulations.
The estate was originally built in 2005 by developer Doug Manchester and designed by architect Drex Patterson and interior designer Timothy Corrigan. It was conceived to blend the grandeur of French manors with the comfort of a beach house, offering unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean.
Darwin Deason, founder of Affiliated Computer Services, purchased the mansion and an adjacent parcel over 15 years ago for $26 million. The property is secured by a historic seawall along 163 feet of ocean frontage and includes seaside terraces, a boathouse, and natural sea caves.
Among its amenities are a private, elevated oceanfront terrace with imported white sand, reminiscent of Augusta National Golf Course, a pool, a fitness center, and two cabanas. The property is being managed by Compass agents Brett Dickinson and Ross Clark.
