LA High School Student Dies After Fall from Balcony Following Classroom Fight

A 17-year-old Los Angeles high school student, identified as Xavier Nungaray, died on September 30 after he apparently fell from a fourth-floor balcony at Benjamin Franklin High School in Highland Park. The incident occurred shortly after Nungaray was involved in a classroom fight, which was captured on video.

The video footage shows a teacher attempting to intervene in the altercation between Nungaray and another student. Nungaray was knocked to the floor and subsequently fled the classroom. Witnesses reported hearing a loud sound before students were ushered back inside.

According to reports citing witnesses, Nungaray was seen being injured in the fight and then running out of the classroom before jumping over the balcony railing. A classmate told FOX 11 NEWS that they heard things rumbling and falling, then saw students fighting and one student getting hurt badly before throwing himself over the fourth floor.

Nungaray's stepmother told CBS News that he had experienced bullying throughout high school and was reluctant to report it, fearing he would be punished instead of the bully. The Los Angeles Police Department has opened a death investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the fall. Officials have identified and interviewed students involved.

Investigators are analyzing video footage to ascertain if head trauma sustained during the fight may have contributed to disorientation. Police have stated that no foul play is suspected, and no charges have been formally announced.

In a statement, Principal Marine Davtyan acknowledged the impact of the event on the school community, emphasizing that the well-being of students and staff is a top priority. The school has implemented additional security measures and made grief counselors and support staff available to assist students and employees.

Hundreds of classmates, family, and friends gathered at the school to place flowers and candles, write messages, and mourn Nungaray's death. The GoFundMe fundraiser established by his stepmother to cover funeral expenses has garnered significant donations, exceeding $110,000 toward an $180,000 goal.

The Los Angeles Unified School District spokesperson confirmed that additional mental health supports are accessible on campus. Davtyan encouraged families to continue checking in with their children and to reach out to the school for support if needed.
