Los Angeles City Councilmember Traci Park has rejected a proposal that suggested the city fund "sexual relief clinics" for homeless individuals. The proposal, put forth by an unidentified speaker during a public comment period, aimed to create private, taxpayer-funded spaces where homeless people could engage in sexual activity.
Park, whose district includes Venice Beach, addressed the proposal in a video posted to Instagram, labeling it a "bizarre solution" and part of her "Things that would only happen in LA" series. The speaker advocated for the creation of "hygienic sexual relief clinics" for the unhoused, suggesting that sexual release can help reduce stress and improve mood, conditions exacerbated by homelessness.
The proposal also suggested that these clinics be managed with professional oversight and funded by public tax dollars, to provide homeless individuals with "the same comforts in privacy" as others.
"No, we're not doing public sex huts," Park stated in the video, with a later clarification noting that the LA City Council is not considering such a measure. She expressed her dismay at the suggestion, which was met with a range of reactions from stunned to horrified, as shown in her video.
The proposal emerged as the city council faces scrutiny over its homelessness policies. Recently, the council voted 10-3 to lift anti-camping restrictions in more than a dozen parks and public spaces across Hollywood, Silver Lake, and surrounding neighborhoods. This decision makes it easier for homeless individuals to remain in these public areas, reversing restrictions that had been in place for five years.
Park, along with councilmembers Imelda Padilla and Monica Rodriguez, were among the minority who voted to maintain the anti-camping restrictions. "We have spent billions on homeless housing and services, and our constituents have been incredibly generous," Park said. "They have every right to expect something in return."
According to the latest figures from the LA Homeless Service Authority, there are 45,194 people experiencing homelessness in the city.
