Los Angeles is preparing for a weekend of potential disruptions as a biker group has announced a large-scale street event planned for Saturday, July 25, near the Crypto.com Arena. Organizers, identified as the bike clothing brand The Cruizers, have invited individuals with "anything on wheels" to join the gathering, which they refer to as a "takeover."
The event is scheduled to coincide with the "Young Life Tour" near the arena, formerly known as the Staples Center. Social media posts promoting the meetup have used provocative language, urging participants to "come on some player st" and warning others to "Stay that funky a home."
Concerns over potential traffic chaos and public safety arise from past incidents. A video shared on X, formerly Twitter, depicted a previous event where riders allegedly shut down an LA freeway, causing vehicles to stop. The post described the participants as "felonious hooligans" and expressed skepticism about authorities' ability to prevent disruptions.
Authorities are drawing on recent experiences, including a Fourth of July celebration in Newport Beach where over 400 people were arrested amidst widespread chaos. A significant portion of those arrested were youths and minors, with nearly half from out of state. Earlier this year, another downtown LA event reportedly devolved into chaos, resulting in thousands of dollars in damages to the Circa LA Apartments.
According to Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell, the department responded to nearly 700 street takeovers in the previous year. These events led to approximately 1,700 traffic stops and an equal number of citations, with close to 300 arrests made. The department noted a similar trend for the current year.
These social-media-driven gatherings frequently occur on weekend nights across Los Angeles and Orange counties. The specific downtown LA event appears unsanctioned by the city, leaving the LAPD's planned response uncertain. The California Post has reached out to the LAPD for additional information regarding their preparations for the upcoming event.
