Gillies recounted the incident during the birth of her second son, Archie, in 2004. She described how, shortly after Archie was safely placed on her chest, the situation in the delivery room rapidly deteriorated. She sensed a growing panic among the medical staff and felt her own condition worsening as her blood pressure dropped.
"I needed a blood transfusion, and I needed a lot of blood," Gillies stated in an Instagram video. She expressed that she had never anticipated needing donated blood for survival, underscoring that "You never know when you're gonna need blood."
Gillies highlighted the significant need for blood donations in Australia, noting that a donation is required every 18 seconds. She urged those considering donating to reflect on the profound difference they could make in someone's life, calling it an "incredible gift."
