An explosive tirade by Kyle Walker, reportedly containing multiple expletives, has been revealed as the catalyst for his departure from Manchester City and a subsequent shift in Pep Guardiola's philosophy on appointing team captains. The incident, captured in the new Prime Video docuseries "A Beautiful Obsession," occurred in the dressing room after a defeat to Liverpool in early December 2025.

Walker, who had been voted captain by his peers that season, confronted Guardiola over what he perceived as excessive public criticism. The documentary details an exchange where Guardiola dissects a defensive error made by Ruben Dias, which led to a penalty against City. Walker, visibly agitated, responded to Guardiola's critique by stating, "Every f***ing meeting, it's my name."

Walker expressed his belief that Guardiola had not wanted him to be captain, stating, "You didn't want me to be captain. You didn't want me to be your captain." He argued that the persistent focus on his name in team meetings was creating a negative reaction.

Guardiola, in turn, suggested that Walker's captaincy status meant he should be more receptive to criticism, implying that the defender was singled out due to his elevated position within the squad. The exchange underscored a breakdown in the relationship between manager and captain during a difficult period for the team, which was experiencing its worst run of form under Guardiola.

Following this incident, Walker left Manchester City on loan to AC Milan in January 2025, ending an eight-year tenure with the club. The documentary suggests that Guardiola, disappointed by Walker's conduct as captain, subsequently altered his policy on leadership selection, moving away from a system where players voted for their captain.

In a subsequent team talk before a match against Chelsea in late January 2025, Guardiola reportedly held up Walker as an example of behavior not to emulate, lamenting the player's actions. "It was so easy for him – f****** hell - it was so easy for him to come to me [and say] 'I’m done'," Guardiola is quoted as saying. "But he did not behave as a captain to do it. He knows we are in the toughest moment of our lives. We bought you, we have to defend ourselves. We have to say here we are going to die together."

Walker's career trajectory following his departure from City saw him struggle on loan in Italy before moving to Burnley and eventually playing in the Championship. "A Beautiful Obsession" is set to launch exclusively on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland on August 19, 2026.
