Kyle Walker's departure from Manchester City in January 2025 was reportedly precipitated by a heated argument with manager Pep Guardiola, according to a new documentary, 'A Beautiful Obsession.' The 96-cap England international, who had been captain, left the club on loan for AC Milan, concluding an eight-year stint at the Etihad Stadium.
The tension between Walker and Guardiola had reportedly been building during the team's worst run of form under the manager's tenure. A pivotal moment appears to have occurred after a defeat at Anfield against Liverpool in early December 2024. During a dressing room exchange, Walker allegedly confronted Guardiola, claiming the manager had never wanted him to be captain. Walker expressed frustration over what he perceived as excessive public criticism.
In a scene from the documentary, Guardiola is seen dissecting a goal conceded against Liverpool, which involved a loss of possession by defender Rúben Dias and a subsequent penalty given away by Walker. Guardiola stated that Walker should have understood the consequences of giving away the ball. Walker retorted, suggesting that being constantly singled out in meetings was leading to negative reactions. "Every f***ing meeting, it's my name," Walker was quoted as saying.
Guardiola reportedly suggested that Walker was singled out due to his senior status within the team, implying that experienced players should be able to handle criticism. Walker's response indicated a belief that Guardiola had not wanted him to be captain and that his name was being unnecessarily brought into discussions after individual errors by other players.
The documentary further details Guardiola's disappointment, with the manager reportedly addressing the squad before a match against Chelsea in late January 2025. Guardiola allegedly held Walker up as an example of how a captain should not behave during a difficult period for the team, expressing sadness over the situation and stating Walker could have approached him if he felt he was "done."
As a result of Walker's tenure as captain, Guardiola reportedly revised his policy on allowing players to vote for their skipper. Following his departure from City, Walker struggled initially on loan in Italy before moving to Burnley and currently plays in the Championship.
'A Beautiful Obsession' is set to launch exclusively on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland on August 19, 2026.
