Kyle Walker Maintains Man City's Trophies Are Untouchable Amid Financial Rule Breach Allegations

Former Manchester City captain Kyle Walker has asserted that the club's past trophies cannot be stripped away from the players, even as the club appeals a recent judgment finding them in breach of Premier League financial rules. The independent commission's ruling, made public last week, pertains to alleged financial rule violations by Manchester City between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

Walker, who played for City from 2017 to 2025 and was part of the squad that won the Champions League and 12 domestic titles, commented on the situation during an appearance on talkSPORT. He acknowledged that the verdict "doesn't look great" but emphasized that the period of appeal meant he was hesitant to comment further on the legal proceedings. "But, at a personal level, I can say the lads, we spent many and many a great year celebrating many trophies and everything like that and that's something that, whatever happens, they can't take away from us because we've experienced them nights," Walker stated.

The commission's findings indicated that over £830 million in owner funding was allegedly used to inflate revenues and circumvent Premier League and UEFA financial regulations through non-arm's-length agreements over a nine-year span. Manchester City has contested these findings, releasing a statement on Friday asserting that the opinion contains "clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe." The club maintains its innocence, stating that "a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions relating to this case."

Walker further elaborated on the difficulty of the subject for former players, expressing a desire for their successes to be viewed as legitimate. "It's something that we probably don't want to talk about because we want to be looked upon as winning them trophies, winning them the right way," he said. He also highlighted the impact on the club's supporters, noting that "the fans that have travelled up and down the country, travelled abroad to Istanbul when we won the treble and stuff like that, and they deserve that night as well."
