Kyle MacLachlan has spoken about the emotional apology he made to his former girlfriend Laura Dern regarding his affair with "Twin Peaks" co-star Lara Flynn Boyle. MacLachlan, 67, was in a relationship with Dern, 59, for four years starting in 1985, after meeting on the set of the film "Blue Velvet."
MacLachlan admitted that he "wasn't his best self" during his time with Dern, having engaged in an affair with Boyle. He met Boyle, now 56, while filming the television series "Twin Peaks," during which he was still with Dern. MacLachlan eventually informed Dern of the affair, leading to their separation.
In an interview with The Sunday Times magazine, MacLachlan reflected on this period, stating, "I wasn't my best self during the years I was with Lara, let's just say. I learnt some things the hard way." He noted that his subsequent relationship with Linda Evangelista exposed him to a "completely different world."
MacLachlan and Evangelista became engaged in the mid-1990s and were together for approximately six years before separating in 1998. He later met his wife, Desiree Gruber, in 1999, and they married in 2002, later welcoming their son, Callum, who is now 18.
Despite the past, MacLachlan has maintained contact with Dern, partly due to mutual friends and a recognition of her character. He shared, "but also, ultimately, I've realised what an amazing person she is and I really want her in my life."
MacLachlan, Dern, and Boyle, along with "Blue Velvet" director David Lynch and co-star Isabella Rossellini, remained friends after their respective relationships ended. In 2019, when Lynch received an honorary Oscar, MacLachlan presented it alongside Dern and Rossellini.
Following the ceremony, in the presence of Lynch and Rossellini, MacLachlan formally apologized to Dern for his past infidelity. "We'd spoken about it in the past but there was something about doing it in front of David and Isabella too that made it really cathartic. It was very emotional for me, to be honest," MacLachlan recalled.
Lynch, a four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker known for works such as "Eraserhead," "Wild at Heart," "Lost Highway," and "Mulholland Drive," passed away the previous year. MacLachlan credited Lynch, whom he called a "visionary," for shaping his career, having starred in Lynch's iconic "Blue Velvet" and "Twin Peaks."
