Kyle MacLachlan Apologizes to Laura Dern for Affair

Kyle MacLachlan has revealed he offered a "very emotional" apology to his ex-girlfriend Laura Dern for his years-long affair with his "Twin Peaks" co-star Lara Flynn Boyle. MacLachlan, 67, stated that he was "not my best self" during the period of his relationship with Dern, which lasted from 1985 to 1989.

MacLachlan and Dern met on the set of the 1985 film "Blue Velvet." While still involved with Dern, MacLachlan began an affair with Boyle, whom he met while filming "Twin Peaks." He eventually disclosed the affair to Dern, leading to their separation.

In an interview with The Sunday Times magazine, MacLachlan reflected on this time, saying, "I was not my best self during the years I was with Lara, let's just say. I learnt some things the hard way."

Following his relationships with Dern and Boyle, MacLachlan dated model Linda Evangelista for approximately six years before they separated in 1998. He married producer Desiree Gruber in 2002, and they have one son, Callum.

MacLachlan has maintained contact with Dern, attributing their continued connection to mutual friends and his respect for her character. He shared that the apology occurred in 2019, during a ceremony where their "Blue Velvet" director David Lynch received an honorary Oscar. MacLachlan, Dern, and their "Blue Velvet" co-star Isabella Rossellini presented Lynch with the award. "We'd spoken about it in the past but there was something about doing it in front of David and Isabella too that made it really cathartic," MacLachlan recalled. "It was very emotional for me, to be honest."

Lynch, a four-time Oscar nominee, was known for films such as "Eraserhead," "Wild at Heart," "Lost Highway," and "Mulholland Drive." He passed away the year prior to the reported apology, and MacLachlan had credited the director for influencing his career after starring in Lynch's "Blue Velvet" and "Twin Peaks."
