NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson achieved a significant feat Saturday night, finishing sixth at Richmond Raceway before traveling to Iowa to win the prestigious Knoxville Nationals sprint car race. Larson's performance and subsequent comments have drawn attention, particularly his remarks directed at fans who criticized his participation in the sprint car event.
Larson, who pilots the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet, completed the Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway and then promptly departed for Iowa. He arrived at the Knoxville track with a police escort and went on to win the main event of the four-day sprint car tournament, widely considered one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world. Larson’s flight to Iowa was reportedly the most tracked flight in the United States on Saturday night.
Despite the demanding schedule, Larson expressed that the plan to compete in the Knoxville Nationals was contingent on favorable weather. "When I woke up (Saturday) morning, the weather here looked really bad, like I won’t need a contingency plan. I’ll be able to come here tomorrow and race Sunday. Then the weather was getting better, the forecast was getting better throughout the day," Larson stated. "I was a bit like bummed at that point because I was really happy about the forecast when I woke up. Then I was like, no it’s fine."
Following his victory at Knoxville, Larson addressed criticism from some NASCAR fans who felt he should focus solely on his Cup Series car. "I hope all the fans that were b----ing and moaning about running the prelim night, now understand why. Anybody watching at home, on the internet, in the stands, I hope you realize this was best case scenario," he said. He also noted the significant tracking of his flight, suggesting his popularity extended beyond just NASCAR.
Meanwhile, Joey Logano secured the win in the NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway. Logano's victory has positioned him as a potential championship favorite, a sentiment that brings him satisfaction given the past reactions to his previous title wins.
In other NASCAR news, the upcoming race at Bristol Motor Speedway holds particular significance for the Busch family. Samantha Busch reflected on the track's importance to her husband, Kyle Busch, recalling it as a place where "some of the greatest moments in his career happened."
