Kyle Kennedy, Granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, Dies at 42
Her death marks the latest tragedy in a family history marked by loss and public scrutiny.
Kyle Kennedy, a granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, died at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, on September 21. She was 42 years old.
A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed for Kennedy, who had suffered a severe spinal cord injury in 2020 that left her paralyzed. Her obituary noted her "dry wit and determination" despite her injury and her efforts to be a devoted mother.
Kennedy was the daughter of Michael Kennedy and the niece of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the current Secretary of Health and Human Services. Her great-uncle was President John F. Kennedy.
Her passing adds to a long lineage of tragedies that have affected the Kennedy family, a phenomenon often referred to as the "Kennedy curse." Notable incidents include the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and his brother, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, in 1968. JFK Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy died in a plane crash in 1999. Senator Ted Kennedy was involved in a fatal car accident in 1969 on Chappaquiddick Island.
Drug-related deaths have also impacted the family, including Robert F. Kennedy's son David, who died of an overdose in 1984, and his granddaughter Saoirse Kennedy Hill, who died of an accidental overdose in 2019. In 2020, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, another granddaughter of RFK, and her young son drowned during a canoeing excursion. Kara Kennedy, daughter of Senator Ted Kennedy, died of a heart attack in 2011. Michael Kennedy, son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, died in a skiing accident in 1997. JFK and Jackie Kennedy's infant son Patrick died shortly after birth in 1963. Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy, JFK's sister, died in a plane crash in 1948. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. was killed in a World War II plane crash in 1944.
The family has also faced other public difficulties, including legal accusations against William Kennedy Smith in 1991 and a driving-related incident involving Joseph P. Kennedy II in 1973. Rosemary Kennedy underwent a lobotomy in 1941, leaving her with significant physical and cognitive impairments. More recently, Tatiana Schlossberg, a granddaughter of JFK, died of blood cancer in December 2025 at the age of 35.
