Former NBA No. 1 draft pick Kwame Brown has asserted that LeBron James's presence has a "toxic" and destructive impact on the careers of players around him, framing James as a "marketing machine" rather than an individual.
In an interview on "The Basketball Show," Brown, who never played with James, described the Lakers star's influence as akin to "toxic waste" that "destroys things around it." He cited several players as examples, including Russell Westbrook and Dalton Knecht, suggesting their opportunities were curtailed due to James's orbit. Brown also speculated that either Joel Embiid or V. J. Edgecombe could face negative repercussions if the Philadelphia 76ers do not meet expectations.
Brown further posited that the Lakers' decision to draft Bronny James, LeBron's son, was primarily for legacy purposes. He suggested LeBron could leverage this to claim achievements like being the only father-son duo to play together, be in the playoffs, or compete against each other.
Brown was the first overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft and had a tenure with the Lakers that was widely considered a disappointment. His comments reflect a critical view of James's influence within the league.
