Kumar Sangakkara Files 2,000-Word Complaint Over Alleged Racism by Ryanair Staff
Cricket legend claims Dublin airport staff made offensive remarks and treated him and his wife rudely.
Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara has filed a 2,000-word complaint against Ryanair, alleging that he and his wife experienced racist treatment from airline staff at Dublin Airport.
Sangakkara, who was preparing to fly to Bristol after celebrating his 49th birthday, stated that confusion over an e-visa led to a confrontational exchange with a member of Ryanair staff. Despite having already cleared security and being assured by visa check staff that his e-visas on his mobile phone would suffice at the boarding gate, he was asked to step aside and download them.
According to Sangakkara, a staff member raised her voice and insisted he hurry, threatening to close boarding. When Sangakkara requested more time and called the staff member 'very rude,' she allegedly responded by calling him 'argumentative and aggressive' and threatened not to board him, stating, 'You people with your kinds of passports should expect this.'
Sangakkara's wife, Yehali, reportedly intervened, pointing out the offensive nature of the staff member's comment and highlighting the contrast with their positive experiences in Dublin. The couple was eventually allowed to board, but not before Sangakkara requested the staff member's name, which he claims was refused. He also stated that the airline's subsequent claim that he refused to show his visa was untrue.
Ryanair had previously stated that the passenger refused to provide the required visa documentation during mandatory immigration checks, but acknowledged that he traveled on the flight after checks were completed and his eligibility to travel was verified.
Sangakkara expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that he does not typically raise issues of race but felt this comment was unequivocally offensive. He stated his intention was not to seek publicity but to address what he perceived as incorrect and unacceptable behavior. He is awaiting a response from the airline, which he expects within eight days.
