Kumar Sangakkara Accuses Ryanair Staff of Racism
Cricket legend alleges discriminatory and threatening behavior, calling an alleged staff comment 'racist'.
Cricket icon Kumar Sangakkara has accused Ryanair staff of racism following an incident at Dublin Airport, alleging discriminatory and threatening behavior. Sangakkara, a former Sri Lankan captain, stated that he and his family experienced unacceptable treatment during a recent journey.
In a detailed response on social media platform X, Sangakkara addressed a user who suggested he was unable to recognize equal treatment due to his celebrity status. Sangakkara countered by recounting an alleged statement from Ryanair staff. "When told people like you with your kind of passports should expect this treatment and that if we argued against that obviously disgusting comment we would be considered a threat to other passengers and not boarded is not treating everyone exactly the same but it is racist," Sangakkara wrote.
Initially, Sangakkara had alerted his followers to the incident, tweeting, "Has anyone experienced discriminatory gate personnel @Ryanair in Dublin? I with my family just did and it was shocking. The tone of address and the mishandling of procedure and threatening behavior. Unacceptable for any passenger. First bad experience in Dublin."
Ryanair issued a statement alleging that Sangakkara had "refused to provide the required visa documentation" during the altercation. However, the 49-year-old cricketer has maintained his account of the experience.
The incident drew support from various individuals, including broadcaster Piers Morgan, who tweeted, "Rarely met a more decent, dignified man than Kumar. For him to say this, it must have been truly shameful behaviour. I hope you deal with this urgently & properly @Ryanair."
Sangakkara also engaged with Sri Lankan businessman Sanjiva Weerawarana, who shared his own experiences of discrimination abroad. Sangakkara responded, "It is quite jarring when you experience it @sanjiva." To another fan expressing shock, Sangakkara replied, "No one should experience it not just me."
Sangakkara played 134 Test matches, 404 One Day Internationals, and 56 Twenty20 Internationals for Sri Lanka, accumulating 28,016 international runs, placing him third on the all-time international run-scorers list. He is currently the head coach and director of cricket for the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals and works as a pundit for Sky Sports.
