Kristin Scott Thomas Finds Newfound Happiness in Marriage

Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, 66, has spoken candidly about her marriage to John Micklethwait, revealing she is happier than ever since their union two years ago. The couple, who married in an intimate ceremony in September 2024, have found a deep connection that Scott Thomas describes as inspiring and fulfilling.

"I think I was perfectly happy before but not this happy," Scott Thomas told The Telegraph. "My husband is not the cure to anything [I've been through], but he is a man with whom I can talk about anything, who is inspiring and clever. My partner in crime."

She noted that the happiness she experiences now differs from the early stages of love, describing it as a shared energy and purpose. "What you're looking for when you're in your fifties and sixties is very different from what you're looking for in your twenties, when you want to make babies and you've got the dream of a family thing going on," she explained. "I've worked out what's worth paying attention to and what the really important things in my life are and I've found someone who thinks the same things."

Scott Thomas, known for her roles in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "The English Patient," was previously married to François Olivennes. That marriage, which began in 1987 and produced three children, ended after 17 years. Following the divorce, she expressed a belief that she might remain single, anticipating that potential partners might be deterred by her career.

Despite brief relationships in the intervening years, Scott Thomas eventually decided to marry again. She reflected that her life experiences have prepared her for this second marriage. "To have two hearts, two brains, two minds, two energies all striving for the same thing is fantastic," she said.

Beyond her personal life, Scott Thomas also touched upon the pressures faced by women in Hollywood regarding aging. She admitted to considering cosmetic procedures like facelifts but expressed conflict, noting that while society often implies women should maintain a youthful appearance, such procedures can alter one's natural look. She has opted for non-invasive treatments such as laser therapy and buccal massages.

The actress also highlighted the increasing availability of complex roles for older women in the industry. However, she has previously voiced criticism regarding male reviewers' understanding of plays written from a female perspective, citing the critical reception of Penelope Skinner's "Lyonesse" as an example. While accepting an award from the Women's Prize for Playwriting earlier in the year, she emphasized the crucial role of women playwrights in her career.
