Kristin Cavallari Recalls Painful $250K Financial Lesson After Lending Money to Father
The reality star shared on her podcast that her father never repaid two six-figure loans, impacting her finances and approach to boundaries.
Kristin Cavallari has shared a difficult financial lesson learned in her early twenties, involving two loans totaling $250,000 to her father that were never repaid.
During a recent episode of her podcast, "Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari," the 39-year-old television personality recalled that her father, Dennis Cavallari, approached her for a significant sum of money while she was filming "The Hills," around age 22. She stated that her father asked for a six-figure loan, which she provided, with the promise of repayment and interest.
However, Cavallari explained that the first loan was not repaid, and her father subsequently asked for another six-figure sum. Despite confronting him about the initial unpaid loan, Cavallari ultimately lent him the additional money. She now acknowledges that she does not expect to recover the funds, leaving her "in the hole with my own dad, a quarter of a million dollars."
Cavallari described the experience as a "bad business decision" but also a crucial learning moment. She emphasized the importance of setting boundaries with family and friends regarding finances, something she found challenging at a younger age. "I didn’t know how to set boundaries in my early 20s," she admitted. "I’ve learned that. You know, it would be a very different conversation probably today, but it’s the lending-money-to-people thing."
She expressed that people often expect financial assistance when someone has money, but she stressed that individuals are not obligated to lend money, especially when they have worked hard for it. Cavallari stated that she has worked diligently for her earnings, which makes the financial loss particularly difficult.
As a mother to three children – Camden, 14, Jaxon, 12, and Saylor, 10, with ex-husband Jay Cutler – Cavallari finds it hard to comprehend her father's decision to ask for such a large sum at her young age. "I can’t imagine going to my kids when they’re 22 and asking for that kind of money," she said.
Cavallari has previously spoken about her complicated relationship with her father. In July, on the "Aspire with Emma Grede" podcast, she mentioned that she had eventually cut her father out of her life after he "traumatized" her children. She stated that her father crossed a line with one of her sons, and due to his lack of accountability and apology, she made the decision to sever ties. Cavallari indicated she had not spoken to her father in approximately three years.
She shared a clip of the podcast episode on Instagram, aiming to destigmatize conversations about money, particularly for women. Cavallari wrote, "We’re talking all things MONEY this week!! I’m over money being a taboo topic for women. We’re talking financial independence, the mistakes I’ve made, and everything I’ve learned along the way. If you wanna chase the bag, this one’s for you."
