Kristen Bell Describes Marriage and Parenting in the Public Eye as 'Brutal'
The actress shared the emotional toll of raising children while in the spotlight.
Actress Kristen Bell has described the challenges of navigating marriage and parenthood under public scrutiny as "brutal," admitting that she cries on a weekly basis. In a recent interview with Bustle, Bell, known for her roles in "Frozen" and "The Good Place," emphasized that her public persona does not reflect an easy personal life.
"It's hard," Bell told the outlet. "Do not think because I am on your television that it is easy for me." She revealed that she seeks guidance from parenting experts Dr. Becky Kennedy and Lisa Damour, Ph.D., particularly on managing her social media presence and family's privacy.
Bell, who shares daughters Lincoln, 13, and Delta, 11, with husband Dax Shepard, explained her approach to raising children in the public eye. She aims to balance sharing their family's struggles to help other parents feel less alone with protecting her daughters' privacy as they grow older. "For the good of the people, we should share our dirty stories, we should share our shame, we should share our hardships. But for the good of the one? My main job in life is to protect those two," she stated, referencing a philosophy that blends Kantianism and utilitarianism.
She noted that as her daughters have gotten older, the family's approach to sharing personal details has shifted. "The equation has changed" now that Lincoln and Delta could be exposed to media attention or have reactions to public information about their family. Bell prioritized her daughters' well-being above her career, asserting, "There’s someone else in the mix, and you have to have enough self-awareness and consideration to consider that person. And that person is my daughter, so she’s No. 1."
Bell has previously spoken about unconventional parenting choices, such as allowing her daughters to try non-alcoholic beer and use curse words under specific conditions. She stated that she would readily sacrifice her entire career if it meant protecting her children's well-being.
Shepard has also discussed their parenting methods on his "Armchair Expert" podcast. In November 2025, he described their daughters as "entitled" and "disrespectful" but explained that he encourages them to advocate for themselves. Bell and Shepard, married since October 2013, have often spoken about the compromises and differing viewpoints they navigate in their relationship, emphasizing patience and respectful communication.
