Komatireddy Accuses James of Neglecting Duties for Political Gain

Saritha Komatireddy, a Republican candidate for New York Attorney General, has sharply criticized incumbent Letitia James, accusing her of neglecting core duties to pursue political ambitions and enhance her public profile. Komatireddy asserts that this focus on "vanity projects" has left New Yorkers feeling less safe.

Komatireddy, a former Assistant US Attorney and chief of staff at the DEA, stated that New Yorkers are experiencing increased crime and fear, a situation she attributes directly to James' alleged neglect of her responsibilities. "For the last eight years, we’ve had an attorney general who is more focused on national politics and burnishing her own brand and celebrity, and that has not served New Yorkers," Komatireddy said.

James, however, has pushed back against these accusations, suggesting Komatireddy does not understand the role of the New York State Attorney General. James emphasized that her office primarily handles civil investigations, and criminal investigations typically require a referral from the governor.

Komatireddy contests this, citing specific areas where she believes James has the authority and obligation to act. Regarding hate crimes, Komatireddy stated the Attorney General can intervene if a district attorney fails to prosecute appropriately. On retail theft, she pointed to the organized crime task force within the Attorney General's office as a resource for prosecuting such rings. Komatireddy also noted that the Attorney General can assign her own attorneys to assist district attorneys' offices as special assistant district attorneys.

"There are numerous ways an attorney general can prosecute crime, you just have to want to do it," Komatireddy argued. "Our problem right now is not a lack of resources or a lack of authority. Tish James just doesn’t want to do it."

The challenger also criticized James' approach to homelessness and mental health. Komatireddy has proposed establishing an Office of Civil Commitment to place severely mentally ill individuals in treatment centers, a plan James has reportedly derided. Komatireddy countered that leaving mentally ill individuals on the streets poses a risk to both themselves and the community, calling it a "public safety crisis" and a "humanitarian crisis."

Komatireddy also raised concerns about James' handling of the investigation into the alleged gang rape incident at Cornell University, for which Governor Kathy Hochul appointed James to lead. Komatireddy criticized James for making public statements that she believes demonstrate prejudice and could compromise the integrity of the investigation. "Cases like that have to be handled by serious prosecutors, and it’s unfortunate because Letitia James isn’t a prosecutor," Komatireddy stated, contrasting it with her own experience investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases.

Despite facing an uphill battle as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic state, Komatireddy has campaigned across all 62 counties in New York, aiming to highlight the issues of crime and public safety. "My campaign is about New Yorkers. It’s not about what’s happening anywhere else in the country, I’m focused on the safety of New Yorkers," Komatireddy said. She contends that voters are "fed up with the crime and fed up with the politics."
