Knicks Waive Bruce Brown, Finalize Roster Spot with James Wiseman

The New York Knicks have waived forward Bruce Brown, opting to fill their 14th and final roster spot with center James Wiseman. This decision ensures the team remains under the NBA's restrictive second apron for salary cap management.

Wiseman, the second overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, now has an opportunity to revive his career with the defending champions. His path to the final roster spot was part of a competition that also included veterans Drew Eubanks, Tony Bradley, and Ochai Agbaji during training camp and the preseason. Brown also vied for the position.

Ideally, the Knicks would have preferred to retain both Wiseman and Brown. However, doing so would have necessitated a trade to create salary cap flexibility, a move the team was unable to execute. The need for a third center behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond ultimately gave Wiseman an advantage over Brown, who primarily plays the wing position.

Wiseman enters the season aiming to fill the role previously held by Ariel Hukporti as the third-string center. This position is considered crucial, particularly given Towns' tendency to accumulate fouls. The center position has seen significant changes for the Knicks with the departure of Mitchell Robinson in free agency to join the Celtics. He was subsequently replaced by the more budget-friendly Andre Drummond.

Brown's release is a consequence of the NBA's apron system, which has intensified the challenges for mid-tier players and veterans like him seeking contracts beyond league minimums. With several key players on high salaries, the Knicks had limited financial flexibility to add depth players while remaining compliant with the second apron rules.
