Knicks Prepare for Season After Championship Summer, Facing Complacency Challenge
The New York Knicks are shifting their focus from a summer of adulation back to basketball as training camp begins, with players acknowledging the challenge of maintaining their competitive edge.

As the New York Knicks commence training camp, the team faces the challenge of transitioning from a summer filled with public recognition to the demands of defending their championship. Players and staff are emphasizing the need to shake off complacency and recapture the underdog mentality that fueled their previous success.
The offseason saw prominent Knicks players, including Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart, participating in numerous public events and media appearances. While these activities are viewed as generally positive and indicative of maturity within the team, the critical question remains whether the team can avoid resting on its laurels.
“Is it cliché if I say it’s 0-0 again?” Towns remarked during an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” He added, “That’s kind of the same thing we said every playoff game, and when we won and kept winning it was great. But this season is about us going out there and starting again at 0-0. Bringing that same hungry team, that team that’s hungry to prove everyone wrong. The underdogs.”
Brunson, whose public profile has significantly risen, echoed this sentiment. "We’ve done something that everyone has wanted us to do for 53 years now. And now people are going around saying, You guys are the champs, you guys are the best thing ever. It’s been said to us all summer," he told The Post. "When people say that, can we let that go through one ear and out the other? Can we just focus on what we can do this year? Because last year was last year."
Brunson stressed the importance of internal focus, stating, "It cannot be in our mindset. It cannot be our focal point if we want to get better. So I think that’s the question we need to ask. And if we can do that, we’re going to be in good shape to be able to be in a better mindset. If not, then we’re going to be behind the eight ball."
To combat potential complacency, the Knicks are reportedly leaning on external motivation, including their standing as third favorites in betting odds and the absence of any players in ESPN's top-five rankings. The emergence of new threats in the league, such as Philadelphia, Miami, and Toronto, also serves as a reminder that past success does not guarantee future results.
“I don’t think we have a big target because I don’t think anyone is picking us to win again,” Hart said. “We’re using it as fuel, we’re still the hunters, we’re not satisfied with one.”
This mindset is expected to be a key theme as the team works to rebuild momentum and focus during training camp, with the ultimate goal of repeating their championship success.
