Knicks Lose NBA Cup Opener to 76ers as Brunson Falters in Clutch
Jalen Brunson's late-game struggles contributed to the New York Knicks' 98-93 defeat against the Philadelphia 76ers in their NBA Cup opener.
The New York Knicks began their NBA Cup title defense with a 98-93 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, a defeat marked by a late-game slump from star point guard Jalen Brunson. The Knicks are now halfway through their season series against the 76ers and face a significant deficit to overcome.
Brunson, who had scored 38 points two nights prior in Chicago, struggled in the crucial final minutes against Philadelphia. He shot 1-for-5 from the field in the last six-plus minutes of the game and missed a critical free throw with 32 seconds remaining. This missed opportunity allowed Tyrese Maxey to set up a game-sealing alley-oop for LeBron James, securing the victory for the 76ers.
James was a pivotal player for Philadelphia, contributing 20 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. His late-game performance included a fadeaway jumper over OG Anunoby with 1:10 left, which gave the 76ers the lead they would not relinquish. Maxey led all scorers with 27 points. Brunson finished the game with 24 points and six assists, shooting 8-for-22 from the field. Karl-Anthony Towns was the Knicks' leading scorer with 22 points and 12 rebounds, shooting an efficient 8-for-12.
The Knicks started the game slowly, scoring only 21 points in the first quarter on 41% shooting and without any free-throw attempts. Their offensive struggles continued into the second quarter, with Brunson holding the ball as time expired at the half, highlighting the team's difficulties. They entered halftime trailing 53-44 with only four free-throw attempts.
Despite the slow start, the Knicks showed signs of life in the third quarter, with Brunson stepping up his performance. Towns also provided an offensive boost at the start of the fourth quarter, bringing the Knicks within five points with six minutes remaining. However, they were unable to complete the comeback, with Brunson's late-game misses proving costly.
The loss puts pressure on the Knicks to win their remaining three group games to advance in the NBA Cup tournament. This marks the first match of their defense of the NBA Cup championship.
