Knicks Face Contract Stalemate with Karl-Anthony Towns

The New York Knicks are encountering difficulties in retaining a key player from their 2026 championship team, as contract negotiations with Karl-Anthony Towns have reached a standstill.

Towns revealed his dissatisfaction with the ongoing talks on Monday, stating, "Simply put, I want to do something to keep the team together and can work with the Knicks and also values me. And none of those things are close to happening." When questioned about the possibility of an agreement before the regular season begins, Towns admitted, "It doesn't look good."

The center became eligible for a contract extension in August, but discussions have been hampered by a significant difference in valuation. The maximum extension Towns is eligible for is a four-year deal worth $277 million. However, the Knicks' reported offer, a four-year contract valued at $200 million, is considerably lower than what Towns believes he deserves following the team's championship victory.

"You'd think it was pretty easy. Unless you guys [reporters] think I have something else to prove," Towns commented when asked if he felt his performance warranted a substantial reward.

The Knicks are managing multiple expiring contracts this season, with guards Josh Hart and Miles McBride also eligible for extensions until June. The following season, star guard Jalen Brunson will be eligible for an extension. These contract considerations are occurring as the team aims to remain below the NBA's second salary cap apron.
