Knicks Center Rotation Shifts Following Mitchell Robinson's Departure

The New York Knicks are entering the new season with a significantly altered center rotation following the free agency departure of Mitchell Robinson to the Boston Celtics. This marks the most substantial change to the championship-winning roster from the previous season and will be closely watched, particularly in the early games. Andre Drummond is set to serve as the backup center, stepping into a role that will require a collective effort from the team to compensate for Robinson's absence.

Coach Mike Brown acknowledged the change, stating, "Mitch is a great player. We’re not bringing Andre in here to quote-unquote be Mitch. Andre’s going to be Andre, but that means everybody else has to give a little bit more defensively, and has to give a little bit more when it comes to offensive and defensive rebounding." Drummond, a veteran center at 33, brings a history of strong rebounding but is now tasked with replacing Robinson, who was recognized as the NBA's premier offensive rebounder.

The competition for the third center spot concluded with James Wiseman securing the position. Wiseman, a former second overall draft pick by the Golden State Warriors, has demonstrated athletic potential but has faced challenges in meeting expectations. Brown, who was an assistant coach with the Warriors during Wiseman's tenure, noted the difference in the current situation.

"It was a different situation with the Knicks," Brown said. "You come in as No. 2 pick in the draft with Golden State and you’re talented and skilled as he is and it can be tough on you because of expectations. Not just from the media and fans but sometimes your teammates and coaches and rest of the organization and if it’s hard for certain individuals to live up to. … With this situation, it’s — OK, he’s been around the block, he’s experienced adversity. We’re not looking for him to start or fight for a starting position. We’re not necessarily looking for him to come in and be a backup. He has the luxury of growing at his own pace without much pressure."

The Philadelphia 76ers, the Knicks' opening night opponent, also face uncertainty at the center position. Their backup center, Ariel Hukporti, suffered an Achilles tear during the preseason. Hukporti previously played as the Knicks' third-string center before departing in free agency. Joel Embiid's primary backup, Adem Bona, who was Drummond's teammate last season, will now be expected to handle increased responsibility.
