Knicks Brace for Rivalry with LeBron's 76ers in Season Opener

The New York Knicks are set to open their season against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, a game already generating significant buzz due to the addition of LeBron James to the 76ers roster. Knicks player Josh Hart acknowledged the heightened attention, stating, “Wherever LeBron [James] went in the East, I figured that’d probably be our opening night [game].”

The NBA appears keen on framing this matchup as a burgeoning rivalry, with the two teams scheduled to meet twice within their first six games, both on national television. All four regular-season contests between the Knicks and the 76ers this season will be broadcast nationally.

The 76ers, with a core featuring James, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey, are being positioned as a major contender in the Eastern Conference. Factors contributing to the potential rivalry include the geographical proximity of the two teams, recent playoff history, and James's past statements about envisioning his career with the Knicks.

Knicks coach Mike Brown, who previously coached James, understands the unique dynamic his presence brings. "The reality of it, in coach talk, you want to say every game is the same,” Brown said. “But because of the talk, because of who he is — he is a large figure not just in life, but in the NBA. You also gotta look at the guys they have on the team and the guys they’ve added and the potential of that team and what we accomplished and what we’re trying to accomplish again — all those storylines... it gets larger than life in general.”

Brown acknowledged that while the coaching staff aims to treat every game with equal importance, the magnitude of facing James and the high-profile 76ers roster is undeniable. "Is it gonna be a rivalry at the end of the day? I don’t know. I don’t know where we’re gonna be and where they’re gonna be. … Because of the storylines and all that other stuff with the social media, could it be right now? Yeah, it’s a fun story."

The Knicks represent stability, returning most of their key players from the previous season, fostering strong chemistry. In contrast, the 76ers are a newly assembled team facing immediate championship expectations. Hart noted this difference: “Obviously, we have the same team, but sometimes individuals’ expectations are different than what they were before. So it’s different. Especially a team like that, I’m sure they’re gonna have some bumpy times in the beginning of the year because they gotta get used to playing with each other.”

Regardless of the long-term rivalry status, Tuesday's season opener is poised to be a significant event, carrying substantial implications for both teams and drawing considerable attention from the league and its fans.
