Knicks Allocate $3.7 Million for Employee Championship Rings Amidst Controversy

The New York Knicks are set to distribute 275 championship rings, valued at nearly $4 million, to employees, a move that follows scrutiny over the handling of ring distribution to assistant coaches and an admission of an "unfortunate mistake" involving a cybersecurity test. This plan comes after reports indicated that top assistant coaches were initially presented with empty boxes during the team's ring ceremony.

Sources confirmed that assistant coaches Chris Jent, Rick Brunson, and Brendan O’Connor felt "genuine anger to annoyance" at not receiving their rings. These coaches are expected to receive their actual championship rings shortly, according to a league source. The distribution of 275 rings to players, coaches, and employees was reportedly the original plan.

An MSG spokesman stated, "The company is gifting more than 275 championship rings and jewelry to players, coaches, employees and other members of the Knicks family, worth more than $3.7 million, in recognition of their contributions and celebrating this achievement."

The controversy surrounding the ring distribution was compounded by an earlier incident where the Knicks sent a mass email to MSG corporate staffers. The email, which prompted employees to click a link for ring fittings, was actually a mandatory cybersecurity test designed as a defense against hacking. MSG had recently experienced a hacking incident where an employee login and password were obtained through a similar phishing attack. An MSG spokesman acknowledged the tactic, calling the use of rings as a lure an "unfortunate mistake" to draw employee attention to the security test.

All current players, along with former Knick center Ariel Hukporti, who was present with his new Philadelphia teammates, received their championship rings before the team's home opener against the Sixers. Team executives Leon Rose and William Wesley were also presented with their rings on Tuesday.
