Knicks Aim to Defy NBA Repeat Odds with Core, Tougher East and Renewed Focus

The New York Knicks are embarking on a quest to achieve a rare NBA championship repeat, a feat that has eluded every team in the league for nearly a decade. The overwhelming trajectory of the NBA works against them, as none of the past eight champions have successfully defended their title the following season. The Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018 were the last to accomplish this feat before losing in the 2019 Finals.

"We write our own history," said Knicks guard Josh Hart during the team's Media Day. He acknowledged the league's shift towards parity, influenced by factors like the collective bargaining agreement and the second apron, which makes it difficult for champions to retain their roster without facing significant penalties. This challenge was underscored by the Knicks having to let go of Mitchell Robinson in free agency.

Despite these hurdles, the Knicks return their core players, all of whom are in their prime. "I think we have the confidence knowing that we did do it," stated Jalen Brunson. "That's going to help us, but that can also hurt us. So it's all about how we go into training camp and how we go into these first few weeks to see where we are as a team, and then we'll be able to adjust or continue to grow."

Brunson, Hart, and Mikal Bridges draw on their experience winning an NCAA championship together at Villanova. "Just about not being satisfied, I think, is the biggest takeaway moving forward," Brunson explained. "You still wanna figure out how you can grow as a person, as a player. So I'll use that experience. You just have to find a way to turn the page and move on, and I think it starts with the people who surround you. How quickly can they move on to the next thing?"

A Sharpened Eastern Conference

The Eastern Conference has seen significant shifts over the offseason, presenting new challenges for the Knicks. A rivalry with the Philadelphia 76ers, now bolstered by LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, is anticipated. The Indiana Pacers welcome back a healthy Tyrese Haliburton, and the Milwaukee Bucks have added Giannis Antetokounmpo to their roster, while the Toronto Raptors have reportedly brought back Kawhi Leonard. As defending champions, the Knicks will also be a marked team, with opponents circling their games on the calendar, especially with 34 prime-time matchups scheduled.

"We'll be hunted, but we're going to be hunting other teams as well," said OG Anunoby. Karl-Anthony Towns added, "To repeat is gonna take an even higher sense of discipline and execution. And we're gonna have to be even better than what we showed in the playoffs. All of us are aware that we're gonna have to bring a whole other level to the table if we expect to have a chance to repeat."

Off-Court Considerations

Potential distractions loom off the court as well. The futures of key players Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, and Miles McBride remain uncertain, with all eligible for contract extensions but yet to sign. Both Towns and Hart have expressed some dissatisfaction with their current contract situations, which could potentially divert focus from their repeat aspirations.

Coach Mike Brown emphasized the need for unwavering discipline and focus. "We can't afford to have any slippage in our process. We can't afford to decline with our focus and our energy and our daily habits, to what our standard is." Brunson echoed this sentiment, stating, "The first couple of weeks or whatever of the season is going to show us who we are and where we are."

Having already broken a 53-year championship drought for the Knicks, the team now faces the challenge of rewriting NBA history and etching their names among the league's rare repeat champions. "I think we're all excited for the opportunity to do it again," Hart said. "I think you guys will see that with how we conduct ourselves, with how we play, that we're not satisfied with getting one and that hungriness that we're gonna have."
