Knicks Add Tony Bradley, Waive John Konchar in Roster Shakeup
The team signs Tony Bradley to a training camp tryout deal as the competition for the final roster spot intensifies.
The New York Knicks have waived forward John Konchar and signed center Tony Bradley to a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contract. The move introduces Bradley into the competition for the final roster spot, joining Drew Eubanks and James Wiseman.
Coach Mike Brown acknowledged the team's focus on the center position, noting that Andre Drummond is the only backup center on a guaranteed deal behind starter Karl-Anthony Towns. "We're looking at that position heavily," Brown stated.
However, the battle for the last spot may also involve wings Bruce Brown and Ochai Agbaji. The Knicks could potentially allocate the final roster spot to one of these players, deferring the need for a third-string center.
Describing Bradley, Coach Brown said, "Tony's a veteran guy that's still in his prime and has a good feel for the game. Knows how to play the game the right way."
In addition to Bradley's signing, the Knicks also added Jaden Akins to a two-way contract, filling their last two-way slot. Akins, who was with the Knicks during Summer League, spent last season with the Pistons' G-League team after going undrafted out of Michigan State.
Earlier in the week, Coach Brown humorously commented on Josh Hart's self-proclaimed position. "Josh was a power forward but when it came to the conditioning test, the power forwards and centers have an easier time [requirement]," Brown explained. "Not much, but an easier time than guards. So all year I was calling him a power forward and he was cool with it but I could tell he didn't really like it. But as soon as he heard about the conditioning test, he said he was a power forward."
Separately, Miles McBride reflected on the impact of the Knicks' championship on familial relationships. "I have people coming to me and saying, 'I haven't talked to my family member in 10 years,' " McBride said. "And I'm like, 'Well, we should not be the reason you're rekindling relationships.' But that's cool to hear. It's not what I want to hear necessarily but those are cool moments to hear that what we're doing on the court was able to bring people back together."
