Klopp Implements Strict Rules for German National Team
New Germany coach Jurgen Klopp has reportedly introduced four key regulations, including limitations on family visits and a ban on hairdressers, to foster a more professional and unified environment within the national squad.
Jurgen Klopp, in his first managerial role since leaving Liverpool, has reportedly established four rules for the German national team as he aims to improve their performance. The former Liverpool boss will lead Germany for the first time against the Netherlands in the Nations League. Having taken the job in July after a two-year hiatus from coaching, Klopp's mandate is to restore Germany's standing following a period of underperformance in international tournaments.
Klopp succeeded Julian Nagelsmann after Germany's early exit from the World Cup, an outcome that brought scrutiny to the presence of players' partners and families within the team environment. According to German newspaper Bild, Klopp intends to significantly restrict family access as part of the new regulations.
New Team Regulations
The head coach will reportedly no longer permit 'team outings' where entire families could visit the team's headquarters during tournaments. Instead, families will be allowed limited visits, with the aim of keeping players focused on their collective objectives during training camps and major competitions. This policy seeks to create a more concentrated atmosphere, moving away from the extensive presence of families that was a notable talking point during the previous World Cup campaign.
In a move to enforce new professional standards, players have also been banned from receiving visits from hairdressers at the team's accommodation. They are expected to manage their personal grooming before joining the squad for camps.
Klopp is also reported to have instituted a rule requiring players to be present for dinner at a set time, rather than arriving gradually. This is intended to encourage more social interaction and team bonding among the players. To further enhance unity, conversations during gym sessions and massages will be actively promoted. The use of mobile phones has been prohibited during these times, as well as on matchdays, to ensure player focus on crucial preparations.
Context of Tournament Performance
These initiatives to improve team culture come at a time when Germany is seeking to revitalize its performance in major tournaments. Germany has experienced three consecutive early exits from the World Cup since their victory in 2014, with group stage eliminations in 2018 and 2022, followed by a last-32 exit in the most recent tournament. Their performance in the European Championships has also seen early departures, with their last semi-final appearance in 2016.
Klopp will oversee a 44-man split squad during the initial matches of his tenure, participating in four Nations League fixtures. The unusually large squad is divided to manage an extended three-week international break as they prepare to face the Netherlands, Greece, and Serbia. Klopp has previously expressed strong opinions on media leaks and has stated he would resign if his family faced scrutiny.
Following his debut match against the Netherlands, Klopp's team is scheduled to play Greece. The squad will then be shifted for a match against Serbia on October 1, followed by a second game against Greece on October 4.
