The San Francisco 49ers face a pressing decision regarding which players will be healthy enough to participate in their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams next Thursday in Melbourne, Australia. With the team preparing for a globe-crossing flight, the status of tight end George Kittle appears more certain than that of defensive end Nick Bosa.

Kittle, who underwent surgery for a torn Achilles tendon on January 11, has made significant progress in his recovery. He rejoined the team for 11-on-11 drills on Monday, according to General Manager John Lynch. Bosa, however, had his ACL surgically repaired for the second time last September and has not yet returned to team drills. While Kittle has been actively participating in practice since last Sunday, Bosa's rehabilitation has been less visible.

According to Lynch, Bosa's progress has been occurring behind the scenes, with a plan for him to get on the field Wednesday. However, Lynch acknowledged that it is not an ideal situation. He stated that Bosa has been tracking well, but transitioning to actual football activities presents the next challenge.

Given the team's departure for Australia on Wednesday, there will be limited time to assess Bosa's readiness. By the time the 49ers complete their practice on Wednesday, they will have only hours before their long flight, leaving little opportunity to evaluate his performance or his body's response the following day. This is particularly concerning as Bosa's knee flared up previously when his activity level increased during training camp.

Kittle has expressed that he needed to feel the physicality of the sport again, which he did by participating in team drills on Monday. Bosa has yet to reach this milestone, with only one more practice opportunity before the team's departure.

Importance of Bosa and Kittle

The absence of Bosa for the season opener could be particularly impactful. Last season, the 49ers ranked last in sacks without him. The team will also be without another key pass rusher, Mykel Williams, who is on the Physically Unable to Perform list until at least Week 5.

Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris indicated that the practices in Melbourne would be crucial in determining Bosa's availability. He stated that the team has a legitimate plan in place to prepare Bosa for the season opener.

The logistical challenges of the international trip have also complicated roster decisions. The 49ers have had to inquire about passports for potential practice squad signings, highlighting the intricate planning involved in relocating for the season opener.
