Kisner Calls McIlroy's India Appearance a 'Money Grab'

Golfer and analyst Kevin Kisner has openly criticized Rory McIlroy's participation in the DP World India Championship, characterizing the move as a "money grab" rather than an effort to grow the game of golf.

McIlroy, who is competing in the tournament for the second consecutive year, stated that his participation was part of a global schedule. Kisner, however, dismissed these remarks on the "Fore Play" podcast, suggesting that financial incentives were the primary driver for McIlroy's presence in India. "I guess for the right price, we could all say that comment (about growing the game)," Kisner said. "He doesn’t want to globally expand in India, he wants to get his $10 million bucks and go play in India."

Kisner pointed to the reported appearance fees offered for the event as evidence of his assertion. "I know there’s a pile of guys that got paid for that event," he stated. "How else would you get that event in India with 8 billion people in the middle of the city?"

Adding to his skepticism, Kisner noted that McIlroy is not using his driver in the tournament, a club considered his primary weapon. "You think he wants to go play a tournament where he can’t use his number one weapon? So give me a break," Kisner remarked.

McIlroy himself acknowledged not using his driver on the compact Delhi Golf Club course, stating it was "in the hotel room so I’m not even tempted to go and get it." This strategic choice, coupled with the substantial sums of money involved, led Kisner to believe that the golfers are following a script provided as part of their appearance contracts.

"They always seem to say the right things while they’re over there," Kisner said. "As part of your appearance fee, here’s your script for altruism, and you need to mention these four lines in whatever interview you do throughout the week. Which is totally fine, I’d do it too, and all of us on this podcast would."

The tournament has faced disruptions, with the first round delayed by five hours due to lightning, leading to several players, including McIlroy, completing their rounds on Friday. McIlroy finished his first round with a 2-under 70, placing him in a tie for 17th. The second round was suspended due to darkness and is set to resume Saturday morning.

In addition to the controversy surrounding his motives, McIlroy also drew attention for his attire, debuting baggier pants inspired by fellow golfer Tommy Fleetwood. Kisner, however, offered a critical assessment of this fashion choice, quipping, "He looks even shorter."
