Kirk Cousins Chose Raiders Over Rams for Unexpected Reason: "The Autumn Wind"

Kirk Cousins has revealed that the allure of the Las Vegas Raiders' storied franchise, encapsulated by the iconic "Autumn Wind" poem and its accompanying video, was a significant factor in his decision to join the team over other suitors, including the Los Angeles Rams.

While the Rams, with coach Sean McVay expressing his desire for Cousins to join the team, presented a potential role as a backup to Matthew Stafford, the Raiders offered a different kind of appeal. Cousins was reportedly weighing his options during the offseason, intrigued by the Raiders but not entirely convinced due to the team's recent struggles, which included only two winning seasons since 2002.

However, a video featuring John Facenda's narration of "The Autumn Wind" with its stirring musical score resonated deeply with Cousins. He described this visual and auditory experience as a key element that "pushed me over the edge" in his decision-making process.

"When I saw that Autumn Wind video with the history and the music on, it kind of pushed me over the edge," Cousins said. "There aren’t many organizations in this league with that history and tradition and iconic names. To play for one is a privilege. It’s good to be a part of that history."

This emphasis on the Raiders' deep-rooted history and its powerful branding proved to be a compelling factor, demonstrating that the team's identity extends far beyond its current on-field performance.

The decision appears to have paid off, as the Raiders are off to a 3-0 start to the season. For Cousins, the connection to the Raiders has also extended beyond the football field, with his family experiencing the enthusiasm of "Raider Nation" firsthand.

"It was fun to see the Raider Nation. My son goes to school and he hears 'Raaaaiiders.' They love it and are all in. It’s been fun," Cousins shared.
