Kingfishers Engage in Mid-Air Battle Over Tokyo River
A rare and dramatic confrontation between two kingfishers was captured on camera near a river in Tokyo, Japan.
Two kingfishers engaged in a fierce mid-air battle, locking beaks as they vied for control over a small patch of land. The intense encounter occurred near a river in Tokyo, Japan, during a light drizzle.
A stunning photograph of the confrontation was taken by onlooker Seiichi Tsuboya, 57. The image captures one kingfisher with its teal and grey wings spread wide as it swoops, while a second bird appears suspended mid-air, locked in a beak-to-beak struggle with its opponent.
"After waiting some time and watching each other closely, chasing one another back and forth, the decisive moment finally came," Tsuboya said. "They confronted each other directly for about a minute, I think."
Fortunately, neither bird sustained injuries during the dispute, and both eventually returned to their respective territories. Tsuboya described the event as a rare and precious moment that is very difficult to photograph.
"I spend around 100 days a year photographing kingfishers, but even with that much time in the field, I only get the opportunity to capture a confrontation like this once every one or two years," he explained. "So I was very happy to have been there at the right moment to capture this rare encounter."
