King Tides Flood Huntington Beach, Damaging Over 100 Structures

Devastating king tides inundated Huntington Beach this week, causing damage to approximately 114 structures and forcing evacuations, with officials warning of potential further damage from an anticipated surge next month.

The coastal flooding resulted in six homes being tagged with yellow restrictions due to safety concerns, according to city reports. In one instance, a lithium-ion battery came into contact with saltwater, igniting a fire within a structure.

City crews initiated an emergency response to protect coastal neighborhoods, particularly in Sunset Beach and Huntington Harbour. The city stated that proactive measures were taken, including the deployment of a Mobile Command Post and emergency resources to anticipated impact zones.

The flooding was primarily attributed to king tides, a phenomenon occurring when the moon is at its closest point to Earth and aligns with the sun, leading to exceptionally high water levels. These tides overwhelmed not only residential areas but also parts of the Pacific Coast Highway, which was closed in both directions between Seal Beach and Huntington Beach. The situation also led to the suspension of Orange County Metrolink service.

In Newport Beach, floodwaters reached knee-deep in residential streets, entering homes and leaving some vehicles partially submerged. This follows a declaration of a local emergency in Newport Beach on October 9, after similar swells and elevated tides flooded the Balboa Peninsula.

These recent events echo the impact of Tropical Storm Rachel, which swept through Southern California weeks prior, causing significant damage to homes and boardwalks, including in Long Beach where the century-old boardwalk was affected by powerful waves.
