Sir Clive Alderton, King Charles's principal private secretary, is set to step down next year, initiating a search for his successor. Sir Clive, who has been a key behind-the-scenes figure in the Royal Household for 20 years, will remain in his post until his 60th birthday in May 2027, at which point he will assist in the transition to his replacement.
His role has been instrumental in organizing the King and Queen's official duties, advising on significant events such as the Coronation, and contributing to personal aspects of the monarchy. A former diplomat, Sir Clive's position has been compared to that of a permanent secretary in Whitehall, wielding considerable influence and access to power while operating outside the public spotlight.
Sir Clive played a role in managing the transition of the Crown to King Charles and Queen Camilla in September 2022. He also held a position of responsibility during discussions concerning the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to step back as working royals. Prince Harry, in his memoir, referred to a figure he dubbed "the Wasp," widely believed to be Sir Clive, in relation to these discussions.
In a statement, a Palace spokesman expressed the King and Queen's profound gratitude to Sir Clive for his "tireless support and wise counsel" and his "enduring loyalty" that will facilitate a smooth handover.
Sir Clive's annual compensation package ranged from £300,000 to £305,000. He described his tenure as "the greatest imaginable honour to serve the King and Queen in my present role through such historic times and with unforgettable humour along the way."
