Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, 43, who has served as senior equerry to King Charles and Queen Camilla for seven years, is set to depart the royal household at the end of the year. His departure marks the end of 22 years of service in the British Army.

A statement from Buckingham Palace confirmed Thompson's plans, expressing gratitude for his service and wishing him well in his future endeavors. Thompson intends to transition to a role in the private sector.

Thompson, a member of the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland, became a recognizable figure for his role in supporting the King and Queen at numerous public events. He previously served as one of Queen Elizabeth II's senior bodyguards, often accompanying her at Balmoral. He was appointed equerry to Charles and Camilla in December 2019.

His duties have included assisting the monarch with daily tasks, appearing alongside him at public engagements, and managing royal carriages and vehicles for state ceremonies. The role of equerry is a long-standing tradition, formalised in 1854, symbolizing the connection between the Royal Family and the armed forces.

Thompson gained significant public attention following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, remaining a constant presence by King Charles's side. He was notably seen calmly removing a pen tray from the King's desk during the proclamation ceremony and participated in the procession for the Queen's coffin.

His public profile rose further when he was featured in viral online content, with some royal fans expressing admiration for his appearance. This attention extended to international figures; in May, US lifestyle expert Martha Stewart described Thompson as "totally charming, completely cool, exceedingly handsome" during the King's state visit to New York.

Thompson was promoted to senior equerry in October 2023, a role that placed him as a key aide to the monarch. However, reports at the time suggested he had become uncomfortable with the increasing public attention, and the promotion was seen as a move to a more behind-the-scenes position. He joined the Royal Family for their annual Christmas walkabout at Sandringham in December 2023.

His marriage to PR executive Olivia Lewis in May 2025 and the birth of their daughter, Theodora, earlier this year are seen by some as factors contributing to his desire for a more stable and less demanding personal life. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams suggested that Thompson's move to the private sector was likely influenced by his new domestic responsibilities, allowing for a "quieter life."
