Reports suggest King Charles III intends to offer Prince Harry a room at Buckingham Palace during his expected visit to the United Kingdom in September. This reported gesture is being interpreted by royal experts as a signal of defiance toward Prince William, who is said to want no further contact with his estranged brother.
While King Charles and Prince William are described as civil toward each other, sources indicate ongoing disagreements about the direction of the monarchy. Royal biographer Hugo Vickers noted that William believes he knows best, while author Christopher Andersen stated that William feels his father has not adequately supported him in drawing a line after the publication of Harry's memoir, "Spare."
Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back as senior working royals in 2020, leading to an estrangement from the royal family. Harry's memoir and subsequent interviews have further deepened the rift. Despite this, King Charles reportedly hosted his younger son and his family at his country estate, Highgrove House, in July, a meeting that, according to Vanity Fair, was not even known to William and his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner told Fox News Digital that Charles's reported offer to accommodate Harry at Buckingham Palace is "a potential lifeline" and a "major sign of defiance to William’s wishes of no future contact with his erstwhile brother." British broadcaster Helena Chard suggested that William is known for being stubborn and slow to forgive, having had to grow up quickly and protect the institution while his brother departed.
Andersen added that William's actions stem from a strong sense of duty and a belief that Harry has damaged the royal family's reputation. He feels Harry has betrayed current, past, and future generations of royals. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams commented that while Charles, who is battling cancer, may wish to see his grandchildren, William, Catherine, and their family represent the future of the monarchy and are focused on setting boundaries and planning for that future.
Hilary Fordwich, a British royal expert, suggested that while reports of a fracture between Charles and William might be overstated, their approaches to dealing with Harry remain misaligned. She noted that William is strategic and that his zero-tolerance approach could increase his influence if proven correct.
