King Charles III has granted a posthumous pardon to Ruth Ellis, the last woman sentenced to death in Britain. Ellis was convicted of murdering her lover, David Blakely, in 1955.
The pardon arrives more than seven decades after the conviction. Ellis freely admitted to the crime and stated that it was premeditated, a significant factor in murder trials.
The circumstances of the case and the subsequent pardon have raised questions about the appropriateness of the King's decision.
