King Charles III is reportedly extending greater compassion to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in an effort to avoid repeating past mistakes made with the Duke of Windsor. Royal biographer Andrew Lownie claims that the monarch is navigating a "difficult position" as he seeks reconciliation with his youngest son and daughter-in-law.
Lownie suggests that Charles is conscious of ensuring Harry and Meghan are not ostracized from the Royal Family in a manner similar to how previous royals have been treated. This approach is particularly notable given that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to be fostering a relationship with the monarch since their return to the UK. In July, King Charles reportedly hosted the Sussexes and their children at Highgrove House for an afternoon, signaling an openness to continued engagement.
The King's approach is seen as a departure from what might have been expected, especially in light of the strained relationship between the Sussexes and the broader Royal Family. While the relationship is described as fraught with controversy, Charles has publicly demonstrated a more compassionate stance toward Harry and Meghan since their decision to step back from royal duties in 2020.

Lownie has indicated that while Charles is taking a more "sentimental" and "very compassionate" path, William is exhibiting toughness to ensure a "clean slate" for his future reign. The historical precedent of the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne in December 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson, looms large. That decision clashed with his responsibilities as head of the Church of England and triggered a constitutional crisis. Lownie's analysis implies that King Charles is keen to avoid a similar rift with his own son, aiming for a more unified approach within the modern monarchy.
