King Charles and his heir, Prince William, maintain a civil but not a particularly warm relationship, according to sources speaking to Page Six. This dynamic exists despite their shared challenges, including navigating Prince Harry's departure from the royal family and the scandal surrounding Prince Andrew.

Royal biographer Hugo Vickers suggested that a key factor in their relationship is William's belief that he "knows best." Royal writer Robert Jobson noted that "there have been differences of opinion and a few problems a couple of years back," but added that both Charles and William understand the necessity of working together, especially as William prepares to ascend to the throne. "William has to rise above it all if he’s going to be king, and both he and Charles know they have to work together. There’s a lot of decisions that Charles will make that will affect William,” Jobson stated.

Despite these underlying tensions, the father and son meet regularly and converse, with Jobson characterizing their interactions as "perfectly civil." According to a new biography detailing the evolution of their relationship, Charles and William have grown closer in recent years due to external family crises. A source familiar with the matter indicated that while the King loves both his sons equally, his relationship with the Prince of Wales has strengthened during periods of difficulty.

As the heir apparent, William occupies a "higher plane," according to Jobson. This distinct position influences his relationship with his father and brother. Following Prince Harry's recent visit to the UK, during which he brought his children to see King Charles for the first time in four years, Jobson observed that William recognizes the differing agendas and relationships his brother has with their father.

Prince Harry has previously spoken about his father's emotional distance during his childhood, recalling comments from Charles that suggested a belief that suffering was an inherent part of life. Harry has expressed a desire to break this cycle, stating, "If you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences that you had, you can make it right for your kids."

While King Charles has met with Prince Harry, even after the public scrutiny of his memoir and Netflix series, sources predict that the estrangement between the brothers will persist. Jobson believes William is unlikely to reconcile with Harry, citing their different paths. Vickers, however, suggested that William's conviction that he knows best could ultimately be a strength, stating, "We should give him a chance. He might make a super king."
