Daniel Kinahan, a suspected mob boss, is expected to be extradited from Dubai to Ireland within the next six weeks following the loss of his final appeal. This development is reportedly causing significant political unease for Irish Justice Minister 'Big Jim' O'Callaghan, with sources indicating it would be politically damaging to see Kinahan returned on a government-owned jet. The extradition process is anticipated to mirror that of gang lieutenant Seán McGovern, who was flown back to Ireland on an Air Corps Casa C295 last year.
Once back in Ireland, the 48-year-old Kinahan will face trial at the Special Criminal Court on charges of directing the activities of a criminal gang. He is the son of Christy Kinahan, known as 'Dapper Don'.
Kinahan's extradition proceedings come as former U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit his Doonbeg Golf Resort in County Clare for the Amgen Irish Open. The timing of Trump's visit could potentially overlap with Kinahan's return to Ireland.
Kinahan's Public Statements
In a recent interview with controversial podcaster James English, Kinahan broke his silence, claiming he has been the victim of a media "witchhunt." He asserted that information about him has been shaped by media narratives and urged the public to "start joining the dots" to understand the situation. He expressed an expectation of a lengthy prison sentence, stating, "I expect ‘life’ in jail."
Kinahan, identified as one of the alleged leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group, was arrested in Dubai in April under a warrant issued by Irish courts. He had relocated to the United Arab Emirates from Spain following the 2016 murder of his associate David Byrne at the Regency Hotel. Gardaí believe Daniel Kinahan was the primary target in the attack, which significantly escalated the Hutch-Kinahan feud.
