Jimmy Kimmel, host of ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," has suggested that a change in the U.S. presidency could be beneficial for the future of late-night television. When asked by The Hollywood Reporter what might "save the future of late-night television," Kimmel responded, "A different president would be a good start."
Kimmel's comments come as late-night hosts have frequently incorporated political humor into their shows, often targeting President Donald Trump. During his summer break, guest hosts have continued this trend on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," with jokes aimed at various aspects of Trump's presidency and public persona.
Reflecting on his most recent season, Kimmel highlighted his six-day suspension from ABC. The network had removed "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" from the air following a monologue that addressed conservative backlash to the assassination of podcaster Charlie Kirk. Kimmel stated that the suspension followed pressure from the Trump administration and threats from the FCC. ABC reinstated the show after a week, amidst significant public and celebrity support for Kimmel.
Kimmel described the reaction to his suspension as the most memorable event of the season, noting the unexpected support he received from a wide range of individuals. Notably, some conservative figures, including Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, and former Representative Tulsi Gabbard, publicly criticized Kimmel's suspension, despite often being the subject of his monologues.
When asked about a hypothetical encounter with President Trump, Kimmel offered a lighthearted response, joking, "Which button do we push for a Diet Coke?"
Kimmel is currently on his summer hiatus. Anthony Anderson and Rosie O'Donnell are scheduled to guest host the show in the coming weeks.
