Kimmel Criticized for Mocking New White House Press Secretary's Qualifications

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is facing accusations of hypocrisy and a potential double standard following his remarks about new White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia. Alex Christy, a news analyst from the conservative watchdog group Media Research Center (MRC), argued in an opinion piece and on social media that Kimmel unfairly questioned Zacharia's qualifications while mocking her appearance.

During his Monday monologue, Kimmel introduced Zacharia by joking about a fictional Harvard graduate receiving the press secretary position. He then showed a photo of Zacharia, 42, in a gym setting from a December 2024 Instagram post, quipping, "Seen here thinking." Another image followed of Zacharia with Donald Trump at a Turning Point USA event, prompting Kimmel to state, "Katie met a number of qualifications for this job: She has blonde hair, she can do a thumbs up and… end of list, really."

Christy drew a comparison between Kimmel's comments and the recent criticism comedian Shane Gillis received for remarks made during his return to Saturday Night Live. Gillis had joked, "I haven't been to the gym in so long I didn't know women just dress like whors now?" Christy contended that Kimmel's commentary on Zacharia, including showing her in gym attire to suggest a lack of intelligence, mirrored Gillis's joke but received less scrutiny.

Kimmel also sarcastically commented on Zacharia's appearance, suggesting a similarity among Trump's recent press secretaries. "Where do they all get that same face? Is that makeup or do they have a machine that stamps it on?" he quipped. He further mocked her first press briefing, which lasted 14 minutes, saying it was enough time for her to "slobber a whole tube of lip gloss all over the president’s behind."

Christy highlighted comments made by Kimmel's writer and producer, Molly McNearney, from a previous instance where she criticized jokes about Hillary Clinton's attire, stating, "We’d never talk about a man’s outfit." He argued that Kimmel's actions contradicted this sentiment when applied to a Republican woman.

The Media Research Center, founded in 1987, describes itself as dedicated to "exposing & combating liberal media bias." Christy's X post detailing these claims garnered significant attention, reportedly receiving nearly 500,000 views. The Daily Mail has reached out to the White House and ABC for comment.
