Kim Kardashian has agreed to waive $167,000 in legal fees owed to her by Ivan Cantu, a man she mistakenly identified on social media in February 2024. Cantu had sued Kardashian for damages, claiming she "labeled him a criminal to her 350+ million followers... at a very sensitive time in his life, causing anxiety and depression." The lawsuit was dismissed, and Cantu was subsequently ordered to pay Kardashian's legal costs.
According to reports, Kardashian and Cantu have since reached a private agreement to resolve the matter. A legal representative for Kardashian stated that the lawsuit "should never have been filed" and that Kim "agreed to waive those fees and so [Ivan] has dismissed his case with prejudice."
Kardashian's initial social media post aimed to draw attention to the case of a death row inmate named Ivan Cantu. However, the inmate facing execution in Texas was a different individual from the one whose image Kardashian shared. The Texas death row inmate, also named Ivan Cantu, was executed on February 28, 2024, following his conviction in a 2000 double murder.
Cantu, who sued Kardashian, had argued in his legal filing that the reality television star was "born and raised in great wealth and luxury" and "enjoys substantial income and wealth through sponsors of her social media posts." He claimed her posting the wrong picture on such a critical issue "was clearly untrue, erroneous, unfounded, shocking, scandalous, degrading, disgraceful, and/or shameful."
Attorneys for Kardashian had previously described the misidentification as a "simple mistake" stemming from "Kim’s longstanding commitment to the cause of criminal justice reform," adding that the image was removed promptly after the error was discovered.
Meanwhile, Kardashian also recently shared photos from a lake trip, where she posted images of herself in a bikini on Instagram. The mogul's post included pictures with her niece Penelope Disick and daughter Chicago, and it has garnered significant engagement from her followers. She also recently posted a tribute to her late grandmother, MJ Campbell, who passed away in July.
