Kim Kardashian Sparks Speculation Over Purchase of Elizabeth Taylor's Iconic Cape

Kim Kardashian has ignited speculation that she has acquired Elizabeth Taylor's renowned Scorpio Evening Cape. The reality star, 45, was recently observed on the set of her television series, "All's Fair," adorned in a garment that bears a striking resemblance to the historic cape.

Kardashian, known for her collection of historically significant fashion pieces, including items once owned by Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana, was seen playing the head of an all-female divorce firm in the series. The cape in question, designed by Tiziani Roma, features an ivory silk lining, a dramatic hood, and two scorpions intricately embroidered on the chest. It was famously worn by Elizabeth Taylor to Grace Kelly's 40th birthday celebration in 1969.

During that event, Taylor paired the cape with her legendary Taylor-Burton necklace. The necklace itself was later sold by Taylor in 1979 for £3.8 million (equivalent to approximately £17.4 million today).

While images from the set show Kardashian wearing a similarly distinctive necklace, the immense value of Taylor's original jewels makes it unlikely she would be accessorizing with the actual Taylor-Burton diamond. However, Kardashian has previously expressed admiration for Taylor, acquiring three of her diamond and jade Lorraine Schwartz bracelets for £49,000 in 2001 and later wearing her diamond chandelier earrings on a Paris runway.

The Scorpio Evening Cape itself was auctioned in 2011 as part of an Elizabeth Taylor Collection sale, fetching $74,500. It remains unclear whether Kardashian was the winning bidder, acquired it privately later, or is wearing a replica for her role. This sighting follows a previous controversy in 2022 when Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe's diamanté Jean Louis gown to the Met Gala, a garment famously worn by Monroe in 1962. The gown, loaned by Ripley's museum, led to debate over concerns for its delicate fabric, although Kardashian later changed into a replica.

If the cape is indeed the original Elizabeth Taylor artifact, it could reignite discussions about the preservation and use of iconic historical garments in contemporary fashion contexts.
