Kim Kardashian has spoken about her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries, stating that she went through with the wedding despite knowing it was the wrong decision because she feared being labeled a “runaway bride.”
Kardashian and Humphries began dating in October 2010 and married in August 2011. Weeks later, Kardashian filed for divorce in October 2011. In the new book “Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future,” Kardashian told journalist Jonathan Van Meter that her intuition told her the marriage to the NBA star would be a mistake.
“I just thought, ‘Well, it’s cold feet.’ But your gut, your soul, is always right,” Kardashian said, according to Us Weekly. “And then I thought, ‘Well, they’re filming for a show, and if I bail now, they’re going to call me ‘the runaway bride’ and it will be an even bigger thing.’ But I should have just not gotten married.”
The wedding and subsequent events were filmed and featured in her family’s reality television series, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Kardashian has described the short-lived marriage as one of her biggest regrets, alongside her sex tape with Ray J.
Kardashian’s mother, Kris Jenner, told Van Meter that she believed her daughter was unhappy and offered her a way out before the wedding. Jenner recounted approaching Kardashian during the rehearsal, saying she felt her daughter was not making the right decision and that she would assist in canceling the ceremony if needed.
Farnaz Farjam, a producer for “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” suggested that Kardashian lacked the confidence to withdraw from the marriage at the time. Farjam noted that early in the show’s run, Kardashian appeared to be a hopeful romantic, but lacked the confidence that she later developed through overcoming hardships.
Kardashian was previously married to music producer Damon Thomas from 2000 to 2004. She married Kanye West, now known as Ye, in 2014. Kardashian, who has four children with West, filed for divorce in 2021, which was finalized in November 2022.
Following Kardashian's divorce filing from Humphries, he issued a statement expressing his devastation and commitment to the marriage, stating, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.” Humphries later sought an annulment, alleging the marriage was fraudulent and a publicity stunt, claims that Kardashian denied.
Farjam alleged that Kardashian felt her life was over during the legal dispute. Kardashian found solace in advice from her late grandmother, Mary Jo Shannon, who shared her own experience of a regretted marriage. Shannon recounted realizing her mistake soon after marrying and the embarrassment of the public announcement, but emphasized the importance of moving forward and prioritizing happiness, which Kardashian stated was a key lesson.
