Kim Kardashian Reveals Esophagitis Diagnosis, Echoing Father's Cancer Battle

Kim Kardashian has revealed a new health diagnosis of esophagitis, an inflammation of the esophagus, which she shared in a trailer for the upcoming season of "The Kardashians." The diagnosis carries significant emotional weight for Kardashian, as her father, Robert Kardashian Sr., died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59.

In a clip from the show, Kardashian is seen in a hospital bed, with an off-camera voice asking if the condition is related to her father's cause of death. Her mother, Kris Jenner, becomes emotional at the suggestion. Experts, however, note that esophagitis and esophageal cancer are distinct conditions.

Esophagitis is characterized by inflammation of the esophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), common causes include acid reflux, certain medications, infections, or allergies.

Esophageal cancer, on the other hand, involves the formation of malignant cells within the esophagus. The National Cancer Institute identifies two primary types: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. While esophagitis is not a direct cause of cancer, chronic inflammation, particularly from ongoing acid reflux (GERD), can lead to Barrett's esophagus. This precancerous condition increases the risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma. The NIDDK states that approximately 5% to 15% of individuals with GERD develop Barrett's esophagus, though most do not progress to cancer.

For individuals diagnosed with esophagitis, medical recommendations often include managing underlying causes like GERD with prescribed medications to aid healing. Avoiding trigger foods and drinks such as alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, and mint can also be beneficial. Medical advice suggests waiting at least three hours after eating before lying down, maintaining an elevated sleeping position if reflux occurs at night, losing excess weight, and quitting smoking. Persistent symptoms or developing complications warrant follow-up with a gastroenterologist.

This health revelation follows another health scare for Kardashian in 2025, when doctors discovered a small, unruptured brain aneurysm during an MRI. At the time, she shared that the condition had been present for years, according to her medical team.
